My honest reaction: Interesting, sort of a curveball. Being named after a specific character (Total War: Cleopatra, or TW: Rameses, etc) limits the scope and is typically retained for DLC such as CiG, Alexander, etc. It's an enigmatic word that evokes the specific time period the game will be set in and nothing more.Īlso as Pharoah is a title it still offers that open worlded-ness that Total Wars offer, even historical ones. Pharoahs existed for a long, but still confined amount of time and stopped existing after a certain point. By contrast, Egypt is the name of the country to this day and the title "Total War: Egypt" would be unsuitable both in perhaps conjuring imagery of more recent conflict in the country and in creating confusion as to if it is adapting elements of other wars in Egypt The words "War" and "Rome" in close proximity, I think it is understandable to suggest, evoke the Roman Empire instead of more recent conflicts. While there is of course still the city of Rome, the country isn't called Rome, it's Italy. The games were pitched at the Rise of Rome, but alternative starts (BI, Empire Divided, etc) covered different points in Roman History, where there were different religions, rulers, kings or emperors, etc. I think that's a little more complex, but my inclination is that the Roman Empire was something that existed for a long, but relatively confined amount of time, and very clearly stopped existing after a certain point. "But Kingmaker?", I hear you asking, "why isn't it called Total War: Egypt then?" The key marketable Empire with recognisable symbols such as the hieroglyphs and pyramids, but not the only faction when we get into the game itself. In the same way, Egypt will serve a similar role in my eyes. The setting of the Med in the rise of the Roman Empire allows lots of room for interesting alternative histories between the Greek Cities, Carthage, Gaul and the Diadotchi, but Rome is the money-maker. "Rome" Total War doesn't just include Rome, but the Roman Empire is incredibly recognisable, with famous historical events and characters and visually recognisable symbols and iconography. So I think the title, which presumably went through meeting after meeting of devs, executives and focus groups, to me seems logical and marketable, which is the purpose of those meetings.
